Bye Bye Teddy

Sadly my friend Lynzi's dog passed away a few weeks ago from Cancer. He was only two years ago and it was a big blow to her and her family. I didn't know what else to do but draw her little friend he was such a lovely positive pal to have around. ;o(

Make America Fake Again

From my personal project called The 3 Little Wiggies. I decided to combine elements of the classic novel Animal Farm with the children's nursery rhyme the 3 little piggies and throw in Trump for good measure.

Medusa Blink

"Medusa Blink" is my most recent collage. She is made from hand torn strips of Vogue magazines and the occasional strips of Prospect magazine to balance.
Even though she is half the size of the Mother Nature inspired piece I made recently made she took me twice as long because of all those fiddly snake shapes.
I decided to close her eyes because if the legend is true and she catches you in her gaze then you immediately turn to stone...I wasn't taking any chances :O)

Tuesday, 21 June 2016

My latest collage entitled Scorned Nymph is made entirely from Vogue & Prospect magazines that were donated to me by a very kind man I work with. This picture doesn't show how large she is but just look at the adult "V" mask to the left that should give you an indication of her scale. I have been asked if I used pen or paint but all the line work you see is actually just super fine hand torn paper strips I didn't want to use scissors as so to keep that jagged natural feel.

Owl stalk collage

Lately I seem to be moving in a new direction with my work and it all started with getting back to basics. I haven't made a collage since I was around 10 years old & there is something really satisfying and tactile about only using your hands, paper and glue. I'm purposely not using scissors to give the finished artwork an element of freedom and a more expressive torn edge feeling.
The collage has a whole was made from a selection of old bank bill envelopes (the inside of the envelopes have this amazing screen tone pattern) I also used my old payslips which again have a very definite pattern. Finally using an almost transparent paper layer for the under feathers and shreds of the Financial Times and Prophet magazine for the trees. It is not a political statement as someone who once noticed what it was made from and commented on. I just have a lot of bills ;o)

Sheepish commission

This is 3rd time I have been commissioned by Jess @ Ginger Twist Studio. This time it was to create some original branding to represent her exclusive monthly club. Again i was given full artistic freedom and knowing Jess loves bright neon colors I used this as the basis for my simple colour pallete.

St Patricks Day

A little artwork I created recently for for St Patrick's Day this year in honor of the forthcoming gay marriage referendum coming in a few short weeks in Ireland. I took this opportunity to try out a new style of inking I have been working on adding some tiny undulations to create a rippling around the characters outline.

Mondo Guerra Project Runway Allstars Commission

I was delighted when Mondo Guerra of Project Runway US fame got in touch and asked if I would create a cartoon image of him for the launch of his new glasses collection for SEE Eyewear.
My cartoon is going to be blown up into a life sized cardboard cut out version of Mondo to be used in both in-store and window displays across the US branches!!!
For those of you who don't know who Mondo is here is a little link to the man himself famous for his mix of patterns and future retro styling. Mr Mondo

Michael Jackson's THRILLER

My homage to the one and only MJ! I really loved re-watching the video and trying to pick up on every little details of their costumes, as his is especially iconic and classic 80's.

Hansel and Gretel Witch

She has to be one of my favorite characters I have designed. In fact she has inspired me to create a story that retells the Hansel and Gretel saga but from her point of view!

Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel retelling in my style....I wanted to make the kids really cure with an almost old fashioned Bavarian look. As for the Witch I spent two days designing her, the idea is that she is so unkempt that her hair has taken on a life of it's own with all the excess sweets getting stuck and tangled in her locks!

Robin Williams Tribute

Like everyone I was heartbroken the day I heard that Robin Williams had passed! I was in bed smothered with the cold but I couldn't help but put pen to paper and create something in his honor. I truly loved this man and I don't know if it was the medicine I was on but I cried so hard drawing the initial lines I had to Photoshop out the water smudges afterwards ;0(

My Mom!!!!!

When I think of my Mom I think of the hardest working woman I know.  She is never happier than when she is improving her home in some way. My creativity is down to her in so many ways, she even came with me to the big city to go to my 1st ever interview at 17 for Art College. This ones for you Mom I LOVE YOU!!!

Retro Cinderella

I love Disney being a classically trained 2D Animator myself. So i decided to create a series of retro inspired Princesses giving careful consideration to how I could change their most famous outfits to that of the 50's or 60's. I will upload the complete series here soon until then this is just a taster you can view the rest at facebook/mrtoontrait ;o)

STORM The eX-Men

We all know the image of a sexy Super hero clad in revealing leather costume. Yet age pays no attention to such trivial things.

BEAST The eX-MEN

Imagine you spend your whole life being a hero and saving the world and then one day you realize your body just won't let you anymore. That is the idea behind this series of X-Men fan art.

All trick no treat!

A little idea I had knocking around in my head at Halloween. It's cute like most of the stuff I do except this one has a darker undertone when you notice the boy dressed as Batman has a bleed from his nose. This picture is all about bullying ;o(

I feel I'm getting closer to honing my style to that 1950's Bewitched style that i love and admire so much. This was a leaving friend for a girl from my previous work, like me she loves Mad Men, Pin-Up's and all things vintage.

New knitting shop logo and branding

A few short months ago Jess approached me about creating a wee logo for her knitting group "Town Mouse Knitters Club". Growing from strength to strength she is now opening her own specialized retro knitting shop and asked me to design the logo and branding. I can see big things in this ladies future if you could only see how passionate she is about knitting so her shop is sure to succeed ;o)

The Marshmallow lady logo commission

I am currently doing a lot of work for a hugely successful Edinburgh based umbrella company called Burgh Bakes. The wonderful Nicole approached me about creating a logo a few months back that would give that timeless vintage feel that marshmallows conjure up.
She was so impressed when at fairs selling her marshmallows people would recognize her from her own logo! I'm lucky enough to be creating her whole brand identity and in just a few short weeks her new cafe will be opening (first of it's kind in Britain) and I will be involved in creating everything from the look of the cafe interior to it's press releases and merchandising.

New card design

A card design I created quickly the other day for my Auntie in America who is under the weather

I am now part of a brand new Edinburgh based fashion house called "Birds of Prayers" this image was inspired by the upcoming 1st collection...can't wait to do more!!!!!!!!!!

Thursday, 15 March 2012

Many people don't realize but for many big card companies work on their Christmas card designs can begin almost a full year before they even hit the shop shelves. As in the case for this design (1 of 5) I would like to see turned into window clings and cards!
